The Speech You'll Never Hear

If I was in Congress, this is the speech I would have given.

"Mr. Speaker, I come to tell the truth. I come not to judge.
But the truth is that Bill Clinton has not been judged by a jury
of his peers. He has sinned, that is true, but has never posed
as anything but a sinner. Never posed as holier than anyone.
Yet his peers in this body have indeed posed -- as protectors of
decency, of so called 'family values'. Yet they are adulterers.
They have apologized and voiced their regret, yet they are
philanderers nevertheless. And worse, they are the lowest form
of liar -- they are hypocrites.

Before you scurry for the exits, I am not going to out anybody here.
I am going to look at those who would lead the war on the Clinton
presidency.
Yes, these men have admitted their transgressions, but only when
the news was made public, or publication was imminent.

I ask the Speaker-elect, how would you have answered a question
about your sex life, asked by your enemies under oath? I ask you
now, Mr. Livingston, when did you stop cheating on your wife,
assuming you have? You have been dishonest to the one you say
you love most, not once, not twice, not three times, but four times!
That we know of -- were there more? Under oath, Mr. Speaker, what
kind of sex was it? Oral? Anal? Group? How many times with each one?
You have been mighty quiet about your philandering while declaiming
about family values. You are a hypocrite. A man clearly not to be trusted.

Representative Barr, one of the leaders of the anti-Clinton
forces was rumored to have spoken to a white supremacist
organization. He denied it. Then, after pictures surfaced, he admitted it.
He is a liar. And he is a hypocrite, clearly not to be trusted.

Mr. Hyde, the Chairman of the Judiciary committee, also cheated
on his wife. After several decades of living the lie, he was confronted
with this fact. His response? It was a "youthful indiscretion." It is nice
to hear that he thinks of his forties as his youth, but I daresay no one
else would think that. An honest facing up to it? Hardly. He misled us,
maybe not a lie, but as a bastion of the Religious Right, he is a
hypocrite.

I call on these men to resign. I say they are unworthy of our trust.

Where are the Republicans in this body, so quick to undo the last
two presidential elections? Are they condemning this double life
of their leaders? Are they calling for penance of any kind? No, they
are applauding their honesty. Honesty at the point of a gun is not
honesty. It is conceding the undeniable. All these men who slap
adulterers on the back then talk of values are hypocrites.

For me, I think a man's personal life is his own. I do not pose as a
moral exemplar, nor do I talk of family values as if I knew what they
should be for every family. Yet the hypocrites of the world sicken me.
They are unfit to judge the worth of any man, let alone the President
of the United States."
