South Side Dive Bars
Feel free to check these places out, or the ones listed at BarSmart.
In fact, if you are a young and macho college student, have fun doing them all in one night (but only if you are of age and are not driving). But don't forget that there is a fairly strong police patrol presence in the South Side -- be careful where you, um, recycle your drink.
- Anthony's South Side - 1306 E. Carson, 431-8960
- Bar Eleven -- near 11th and Bradish

I was introduced to this bar, which was Orlando's at the time, by a
beautiful girl friend of mine. This place IS the spot in the South
Side. Bar Eleven serves an escape from the prep show over on East Carson. The crowd is always laid back while at the same time partying excessively.
Go and check Bar Eleven out, you'll be a frequent flyer too! (1/26/97)

B-11 is by far the best "Dive Bar" on the South Side. Now I don't consider
this place a Dive by any means. This is a bar that has the greatest selection
of music, people, and shots I have ever seen. The Jocks and Frat boys shy
away from the bar because they just don't belong in such a laid back environment
- Dee's Cafe, 1300 block of E. Carson St.

Cheap & big draft beer (22 oz, $1.25), some better bottles, cheap (and stiff) mixed drinks, killer fish sandwiches. Pool tables. Not bad Sun. - Wed., sometimes overrun with meatheads Thurs. - Sat.
- Jack's on Carson

Yea, the crowds on Friday and Saturday nights are not the best - lots of Jocks and Frat Boys who should stay in Oakland, but come on. It is open 365 days a year and the bartenders are quite friendly. (And they drove out the people who played GD Neil Diamond in the front room over and over which is blessing in it's own right).
- Jack's on 18th St. across the street from the fire station.

- Chuck's bar at the corner of Mission and Sterling streets

As far as dive bars go you'll need scuba gear when you visit Chuck's. No draft beer of any kind the regulars know well enough to bring their favorite mixer with them. The place has a great view of downtown though ... in the rest rooms.
- Paczak's Cafe

Opening full-time a little more than a year ago, Paczak's Cafe is a well-kept secret. 18th and Mary, and you can check it out on the Web.
- Joyce's Celtic Pub
***> Sent by Jesaca (6/14/01):
Other than it's name, there's nothing much Irish about it.
- Lucky Charms
Sent by Jesaca (6/14/01):
Formerly the Silver Dollar, there's nothing Celtic about this one, either, but is a good place to get into a fight.
- Brewskies

Here's one for ya - Brewskies. One of the first bars located on E. Carson coming from Station Square. Nothing gets "diver" than writing on the walls, $2.00 16 oz. drafts, and $1.50 shots. It is an excellant bar to just start the night out right or to end a night of serious drinking. I don't think Brewskies gets a lot of credit, but you won't believe how many people have actually been there and love it. It becomes one's "Cheers", if you let it.
