NCAA Tournament Preview
En route to Duke's coronation, let's see what goodies I can come up with from the first two rounds of the tournament.
First Round
EAST
1 Duke over 16 Florida A&M -- I hope they enjoyed the trip
2 Miami over 15 Lafayette -- Lafayette, you are gone
3 Cincinnati over 14 George Mason -- Too much of an experience edge, but this is not easy
4 Tennessee over 13 Delaware -- Big class edge should be the difference, but UT never wins in the tournament
5 Wisconsin over 12 SW Missouri St -- I'd love to pick against the Badgers, but the one thing SWM hates is a deliberate pace and here it is; SWM 2-6 when scoring under 70
11 Kent over 6 Temple -- I hate Kent's lack of experience, but this is going to be a low scoring game and Kent was 11-4 when scoring under 70, while Temple was 6-6; Kent beat #5 seed UNCC 53-50 at UNCC early in the year. Chaney unhappy with this team, this won't help.
7 Texas over 10 Purdue -- Purdue sucks.
8 College of Charleston over 9 Tulsa -- CofC underseeded.
SOUTH
1 Auburn over 16 Winthrop -- Tiger meat.
2 Maryland over 15 Valparaiso -- Different team for Crusaders, three Frosh start
3 St. John's over 14 Samford -- Never a good thing to have key player arrested day before the game, ask the Falcons
4 Ohio State over 13 Murray St. -- Murray has the experience, but 1-9 history doesn't make that such a thrill.
12 Detroit over 5 UCLA -- Everyone's favorite upset pick, could be a game without big men and UCLA's Davis has injury problems. UCLA's too young.
6 Indiana over 11 George Washington -- I cannot tell a lie, shoddy defense and sloppy guard play isn't the way to beat the Hoosiers
7 Louisville over 10 Creighton -- You beat the Cards with defense, Blue Jays don't play any.
9 Oklahoma St. over 8 Syracuse -- Whoever shoots better from the outside wins. Neither coach loses often in the first round, but Sutton never does.
MIDWEST
1 Michigan St. over 16 Mt. St. Mary's -- Look for nice feature on Jim Phelan and a quick exit.
2 Utah over 15 Arkansas St. -- Experience wins this.
3 Kentucky over 14 New Mexico St -- 'Cats have too much size for Aggies. Also too good.
13 Oklahoma over 4 Arizona -- I didn't think the Sooners would be here, but I think they have a shot. As great as Terry is, the three freshmen may have trouble. If the threes drop for the Sooners, this could be a shocker.
12 Rhode Island over 5 UNC-Charlotte -- UNCC is for real, beat Miami (FL), Cincinnati (twice)
Lousiville (twice) and lost to UNC in OT at Chapel hill. But URI has the best player in Lamar Odom, and I love Jim Harrick as the underdog.
6 Kansas over 11 Evansville -- This scares me, as I think Evansville has a shot here, but their lack of experience and their horrid performance out side their conference scares me off.
7 Washington over 10 Miami (OH) -- If Szczerbiak's knee isn't better than last week, they're dead. If it's okay, they still may have trouble.
8 Villanova over 9 Mississippi -- Ole Miss doesn't win tournament games when they're the better team, don't see why they'd win this. Still both teams staggered home, so it's anyone's guess.
WEST
1 UConn over Texas-San Antonio -- Short trip for the Roadrunners. Short stay, too.
2 Stanford over Alcorn St -- Alcorn is less politically correct than Stanford, team has kept the Braves nickname, but I guess they can afford to be less PC.
14 Weber St over 3 North Carolina -- Call me crazy, but I think UNC is ready for an accident. The win over Maryland may have been a fluke and this is an interesting matchup, the big (UNC) against the quick (Weber).
4 Arkansas over 13 Siena -- The Saints are clearly dangerous and this should be enetertaining. I just don't like up tempo teams playing against better athletes who also want that pace.
5 Iowa over 12 Alabama-Birmingham -- Tom Davis never loses a first round game, won't start here.
11 Penn over 6 Florida -- These two are a long way from home. Are the Gators' freshmen wearing down? Will they have the discipline to handle Penn? If they get past this, they could beat anybody.
10 Gonzaga over 7 Minnesota -- Gophers are in trouble. Their star had a seizure on the plane, half the team is about to be suspended.
8 Missouri over 9 New Mexico -- If Kenny Thomas is 100% the Lobos could take this. Missouri beat Kansas and Texas on the road. Why? Your guess is as good as mine.
Well there they are. I guarantee nothing. I'll be back Friday night with the Second Round.
