Once I found out the secret of the Universe. I have forgotten what it was, but I know that the Creator does not take Creation seriously, for I remember that He sat in Space with all His Work in front of Him and laughed. -- Lord Dunsany, "The Hashish Man"

[1] In August 2000 Peter was diagnosed with inoperable cancer of the pancreas with liver metastases. Although a rare and fortuitous complication of the tumor had required several weeks of hospitalization and thus led to an early detection of the cancer, the rapid and consistent progression of the liver metastases with new lesions in spite of two courses of "standard" chemotherapy and a clinical trial at UPMC left him with few medical options. Although refusing to end his life in hospice care, further experimental treatment in Houston proved similarly unavailing, and Peter died in his sleep on April 25, 2001, about nine months after diagnosis, in the company of Colleen, his beautiful and loving wife of 22 years.
